Strategy Writeup
Zangetsu will start the fight by dashing towards the player and follow up with a slash attack. His slash attacks can be either vertical or horizontal. Avoid the horizontal ones by ducking or jumping over him and the vertical one by backstepping. Zangetsu may at times grapple onto a chandelier and propel himself towards the player. Wait until you see his intended swing path as if you move too early he will adjust where he will land. Players can wait until he falls towards you and slide under him. Counter attack him twice and get some distance. This causes him to dash towards you or grapple to you. Either move will leave him open to a counterattack. He may throw kunai at players and use a vertical slashing jump attack. Watch out for his uppercut slash move if you are close to him. At times, he will provoke you to attack when he is in a defensive stance, do not attack him as this will stun you and allow him to counter you. Instead, use Flame Cannon as he cannot block this attack. In stage 2, Zangetsu's sword will be ablaze which will strengthen his attacks while adding an area of effect to them. In addition, his kunai will explode be careful dodging it.
Attacks & Counters
Attack | Counter |
Phase 1 | |
Vertical Slash | Backstep |
Horizontal Slash | Jump or Crouch |
Kunai | Jump or crouch depending on angle of Kunai |
Downwards Sword Slam (After Grappling) | Slide under him or gain distance between him. |
Upwards Slash | Avoid being above him/backstep |
Defensive Stance | Avoid attacking him or you will be countered |
Phase 2 | |
All Above Attacks | All his attacks will deal more damage and have a larger radius so don't be greedy. Use backstep/crouch/jump/slide to avoid the proper attacks. |

For early game, I found stocking up on true arrow was amazing, close range it can do 100 damage so if you don’t rely on MP that much it’s a great way to get him into phase 2 quickly.

i find an easiest way to fight this boss. Use invert and great sword. Just jump left and right while hitting him on the ceiling,

I beat him with no damage on my first try playing on normal. I had a maxed Bolide Blast, which I use for everything, and it pretty much stun-locked him. So yeah, I don't know if it'll work on higher difficulties but if you are having problems try pulling out Bolide Blast and just blasting away.

I struggled with this guy for a couple hours off and on. Tried several weapons and shards, nothing worked. I finally got the Cowboy hat and Gunman scarf and loaded up on HP bullets. Beat him in under two minutes.
Moral of the story: give that woman a cannon, women love cannons.

Early in the game, this can be a tough fight. Just grind the Gieremund in the previous room (by the save and transport) to get an Ulfberht Sword. You can also grind the Barbatos next to the save for his True Arrow shard to help in this fight. This is like when you are still under level 15 or so.

Was using a Rapier. Like, back dash, he’d charge in I jump behind him, like back dash. He jumps I slide. He guards I jump behind him. Took a while to get the dance correct but feels good when I did.

During his defensive stance you can hit him from his back which knocks him over for a second or two

fought this guy legit for hours, then discovered I could just get in his face and keep jumping behind him when he turned to face me, probably counts as cheese but it turned him into a joke
